Richard Parkes Bonington, born October 25, 1802 near Nottingham, died September 23, 1828 in London.
A British painter and lithographer, he depicted landscapes and seascapes with a romantic sensibility.
Despite his brief career, he was one of the most influential English painters of his time. His technical mastery, derived from the Flemish and Venetian masters, and his resolutely modern style are expressed in works with striking atmospheric qualities, which stand comparison with those of Turner or John Constable.
The largest collection of Bonington's works is held in London at the Wallace Collection.
