antiquity description

An important pair of Louis XVI style sconces in gilt bronze.
Three arms of light with hunting horns joined by a ribbon.
The shaft is topped with a knotted ribbon, finished with two tassels of trimmings, oak leaves and a doe's foot on the horns.
The bell of the trumpets is decorated with a crown of pampers.
Signed on the back Vian for Henri Vian.
Height 108 cm, width 44 cm, depth 28 cm.
Circa 1880.
The original model of this pair of sconces was created by the bronzemakers Edme Jean Gallien (1720-1797) and Pierre Bureaux (born in 1728) for the salon of the Chessy castle.
It was still in fashion under the Empire as a suite of sconces of this model was delivered by Galle on 23 December 1809 for the Salon de Compagnie of the Petit Trianon, illustrated in Ledoux-Lebard, Le petit Trianon, Paris, 1989, p.98.
Several of the most renowned craftsmen, such as Beurdeley, or Henri Vian (Christie's London 10 September 2013, lot 217) made replicas in the late 19th century.
The bronzemaker Henri Vian, grandfather of Boris Vian, reproduced these models with great virtuosity.
He took part in the Universal Exhibitions of 1878, 1889 and 1900 and won a gold medal in 1889.
He made the gates of the Arnaga villa, Edmond Rostand's residence in the Basque Country. He also worked on the Ritz Hotel in London and the Cour des Comptes on rue Cambon.
His shops were located at 5, rue de Thoriny in Paris, in the Hôtel Salé, which today houses the Picasso Museum and the Ecole des métiers d'art.
Delivery possible.
